Awareness and Action for a Cleaner Ganga

The River Ganga connects cities, communities, culture and everyday life across a vast part of India.

Protecting it requires more than cleaning activities alone. It also requires greater awareness about how individual behaviour affects the river and its surroundings.

The Swachh Ganga Expedition is an awareness and cleaning initiative by OCS Foundation and Expeditions For Cause that brings citizens and volunteers together to encourage responsible behaviour and contribute directly to cleaner river environments.

Why Swachh Ganga

Clean Rivers Begin With Responsible Behaviour

Waste that is carelessly discarded on roads, riverbanks and public spaces can eventually become part of a much larger environmental problem.

The Swachh Ganga Expedition extends the idea of responsible waste disposal from our streets to the river.

Its purpose is to encourage people to understand that protecting the Ganga is not only the responsibility of authorities or organisations.

Citizens, visitors, communities and volunteers all have a role to play.

The Swachh Ganga Expedition combines two important forms of participation.

Awareness

Helping people understand why waste should not be thrown on roads, riverbanks or into the river.

Direct Action

Bringing volunteers together for cleaning activities and responsible management of collected waste.

The initiative connects awareness with practical participation so that people can contribute directly to the cause they are being encouraged to support.

The 2014 Expedition

Devprayag to Rishikesh

The Swachh Ganga Expedition was successfully conducted in November 2014 along an approximately 80 kilometre stretch between Devprayag and Rishikesh.

Hundreds of volunteers from:

Delhi

Gurgaon

Devprayag

Rishikesh

participated in the campaign.

The expedition combined cleaning activities with public awareness at different locations along the route.

The Swachh Ganga Expedition therefore focuses on cleaning along with proper management of the trash collected during activities.

Waste should not be allowed to remain on roads, riverbanks or enter the river.

Preventing litter in the first place is as important as removing waste that has already been discarded.

The Swachh Ganga Expedition is closely connected with the wider OCS Foundation message around responsible littering behaviour.

Waste discarded on streets does not always remain where it was thrown.

Wind, rain, drains and waterways can carry waste far beyond its original location.

A responsible habit on the road can therefore also contribute to protecting rivers and other natural environments.

Keeping our surroundings clean begins with recognising these connections.

Everyone Who Visits the River Has a Responsibility

People visit the Ganga for many reasons.

Some live along the river.

Some travel.

Some visit for religious or cultural purposes.

Some come for recreation.

Regardless of the reason, every visitor shares a responsibility not to leave waste behind.

The Swachh Ganga initiative encourages people to become conscious of what they carry, what they use and how they dispose of it.

Responsible behaviour protects the river before cleaning becomes necessary.

Hundreds of volunteers participated in the 2014 expedition.

Volunteers came from Delhi, Gurgaon, Devprayag and Rishikesh, demonstrating how people from different places can come together around a shared environmental responsibility.

Waterproof trash bags are used to support waste collection and management during expedition activities.

The current programme reference provides for support at approximately Rs 500 per bag.

Support Branded Road Activity Bags

Organisations can support bags used during road awareness activities.

The current brochure provides an indicative cost range of approximately Rs 7 to Rs 25 per bag, depending on the type of bag.

Individuals and organisations can support or partner with OCS Foundation for expeditions in different locations.

The latest programme reference provides an indicative expedition support range of approximately Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, depending on the scale and requirements of the expedition.
